This is my favorite Switchfoot album, and I found this while stumbling around the internet. As I recall, it used to be on the Switchfoot website when Nothing Is Sound was about to release...good stuff.

Very similar to the previous offering, except that this album is done in a rock style, rather than with classical instrumentation. Again, this is not one of my favorite collections of Switchfoot memorabilia, but it's still an interesting listen nonetheless. Every once in awhile, you browse a music store and stumble across something new and unique that that, until that moment, you never dreamed existed. In fact, long after listening to the record, you still can't believe such a project was ever created, let alone dreamt up. The String Quartet Tribute To Switchfoot is one of those finds. And while it may not be something you will find firmly lodged within your player for an extended period of time, it's a highly entertaining musical journey.

Vitamin Records has made a name for themselves by releasing unique tributes for numerous mainstream artists including U2, Jennifer Lopez, Evanescence, Chevelle, Creed, The Beatles, and many others. In fact, they don't stop at string quartet variations. Vitamin also offers piano and dance arrangements, among others. But, needless to say, it's rather surprising to find such an often sorely overlooked band given the treatment more renowned artists are getting.

The String Quartet Tribute To Switchfoot is really kind of a strange project. The opening notes of the all-string arrangement for "Meant To Live," lead by a military-style drum beat, is likely to warrant a chuckle from any fan at first. But as the violins and cellos continue, it amounts to a truly intriguing rendition. As the songs progress on the album, however, one common element seems to detract from most of the songs. While the song without vocals might feel much like a soundtrack or accompaniment track, the composers utilize violins to simulate Jon Foreman's vocal melodies. The end result mostly feels exaggerated and melodramatic. You might even expect operatic vocals to jump in at any moment.

The songs that you might expect to translate best into orchestral pieces actually fair the least, as such with "24" and "Let That Be Enough." The latter, originally merely an acoustic with vocals, feels almost too layered here. The simplicity and tenderness of the original only worked to its benefit. The overall vibes, however, of tracks like "Dare You To Move," "This Is Your Life," and especially "Chem 6A" are what really make this project worth listening to.

Some of the orchestrations do come on a bit strong, and at the same time, seem somewhat unpolished. While its an orchestral reinvisioning of the songs, it lacks the theatrical scope that could really make a project like this excel. But if for no other reason, it's just fun to behold if you're a fan of Switchfoot. I'm not sure it's worth the investment to spend the price of a regular record on such an endeavor, but Switchfoot enthusiasts will find The String Quartet Tribute To Switchfoot to be a quirky, and maybe even beautiful, treat indeed.

The Traditional Self Serving Post

You guys probably don't know a whole lot about me, but the you might be able to guess as to what I enjoy doing. Video, music, and other types of media production are things that I really love to do. I plan on going into film as an academic major, because I think film and music are the two most powerful mediums for communication in this day and age. The incredible part is, you can combine both elements to create a product that can speak to almost any audience.

With this in mind, I started a film production group of my own, which I named Economy Of Mercy Films, after the Switchfoot song of the same title.

In the economy of mercy

Economy of Mercy films is dedicated to the creation of films that center on this hope. We wish to be a part of something bigger than ourselves. Our goal is to glorify the one who saved us from our self inflicted demise. Our films are not pulpits and our desire is not to preach. But God has placed a burden on our heart to participate in something meaningful, and film is our outlet.

The most recent film I shot and edited, is entitled "Move Your Feet," and is based on another of my favorite Switchfoot songs, "Love Is The Movement." It was created for the one minute Film Your Issue contest, as were two other entries of mine: "Lonely Nation" and "(Take A) Risk."I didn't expect anything to come of any of these entries, but amazingly, "Move Your Feet" was recently selected as a Semi-Finalist in the contest.

So in the traditional manner of a traditionally self serving post, I was just wondering if any of you soldiers of the "foot" would be interested in voting for my film. You don't have to feel obligated, but I sure would appreciate it.

I said before I wasn't going to upload any bootlegs, because you could get them other places. However, Switchfeed uploaded a ZIP file (located here) that contained an entire bootlegged concert from 2003. Some readers commented on not having available bandwidth to download an entire concert, or simply wanted to listen to individual tracks. 1. Insult Like The Truth - Charlie Peacock featuring Switchfoot
-Charlie Peacock, as early fans of Switchfoot may know, started the indie label Re:think that Switchfoot was originally signed to. They released three albums (Legend Of Chin, New Way To Be Human, and Learning To Breathe) with this label before moving on to record "The Beautiful Letdown." Peacock, besides running a label, was also a recording artist in the CCM market. He released the album "Full Circle," in which he recorded songs of his own, with artists he'd helped discover. Switchfoot was one of those artists. Though they don't sing any lyrics, you can hear them throughout the track, doing back-up vocal duty. A good listen overall. Enjoy!

-This song was remixed and placed on the album "MixDown," a collection of remixed tracks by ForeFront records. This isn't one of the better Switchfoot tracks I've ever heard, simply because the original version is far better than this, but perhaps hardcore fans will appreciate it more than me. Enjoy!

The Beautiful Letdown Special Edition w/Bonus DVD Collection

After Switchfoot's breakout album, "The Beautiful Letdown" started moving up the charts, the record label felt the need to rerelease the album under the guise of a special edition. Although the album stayed exactly the same, the special edition housed new cover art, and more importantly, a bonus DVD. Included was the first (and in my opinion better) version of the music video for "Dare You To Move," along with a behind the scenes look at the video, and a sneak peak of Switchfootage, which was to release later that year. Arguably the best feature of the DVD, however, was something for more intimate. Before Switchfoot opens for a sold out crowd, an assistant tells Jon that there's a crowd of people outside, because they're is no room for them in the venue. So what does he do? Something only Switchfoot would. Goes outside, acoustic guitar in hand, and treats the audience to a stripped down version of On Fire.

There is nothing like Switchfoot. Nothing.
